Bosch has received billion orders for electric mobility

These include series projects for the electric drive of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The group has declared this Tuesday in advance of the auto show IAA in Frankfurt.

This enabled Bosch to compensate, at least in part, for the general market weakness. The Mobility Solutions division, which also produces home appliances, power tools, and industrial and building services in addition to auto parts, once again outperformed global car production in 2019.However, even the Swabians will not quite reach the previous year’s operating revenue, when almost 48 billion euros were transacted. Bosch had already announced before the IAA that the Group would not achieve its return targets this year.

In the works of the world’s largest manufacturer of diesel technology, it should come to staff adjustments, without Bosch calls a number. Electric drives require significantly fewer parts and above all no injection technology.

“The electric drive will be Bosch’s next success story,” says Bosch boss Volkmar Denner on Tuesday at the IAA.

Bosch relies on software to electrify and automate mobility. The mobility division currently employs a good 14,000 software developers and invests three billion euros a year in software expertise. “Bosch makes mobility climate-friendly and affordable,” promised Denner. The company invests 400 million euros annually in emission-free mobility.

The range of the world’s largest automotive supplier ranges from the bicycle to the truck, from the light 48-volt hybridization to the all-electric drive. With its 48-volt battery, Bosch is also aiming for a leading position in electric mobility in the market and has recently signed a long-term cooperation with the Chinese CATL for the corresponding battery cells.

Progress in autonomous driving

According to its own statements, Bosch is expected to exceed its forecast sales of five billion euros in the year 2025 with components and systems from the field of electromobility for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

In addition to 48-volt systems, Bosch will be demonstrating low-consumption gasoline technology at the IAA, which is set to lower the particulate limit value of the new “Euro 6d temp” emissions standard by up to 70 percent even in real operation. A new brake disc is supposed to produce up to 90 percent less brake dust.

The driver assistance system also runs well as a preliminary stage for autonomous driving. In this area, Bosch reports an increase of twelve percent in the current year, with sales of two billion euros.

For further development towards automated driving, the company will invest 4 billion euros by 2022. Bosch is currently developing Level 2 systems for the US and Asian markets – highway assistants, which allow hands to be removed from the steering wheel.

Bosch and Daimler recently received the world’s first approval for a far-reaching Level 4 system in Germany for automatic parking in the parking garage of the Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz Museum. By the end of 2021, a dozen additional parking garages will be equipped with automated valet parking. This is the world’s first fully automated and driverless parking function.

In mobility services, Bosch is now working with the largest providers Didi, Lyft and Uber, which together already provide more than 50 million journeys per day worldwide. China’s leading mobility provider Didi, for example, uses cloud-based battery services from Bosch to extend the life of vehicle batteries.

Overall, Bosch expects that more than 2.5 million online shuttle vehicles will be on the road worldwide by 2025.

At the beginning of the year, the Group started a cooperation with the chassis and automotive expert Benteler. Automobili Pininfarina will be the first customer to use the chassis.

A reversal of traffic with an immediate stop for combustion engines rejected the Bosch boss on Tuesday. “What is ecologically correct, must not be economically and socially wrong,” said Denner. “We will have to find a new balance in the triangle between environmental, economic and social interests,” he added.
